Advancing Safety and Opportunity: Our 2024 TCEP Grant Application to the California Transportation Commission

We are excited to have submitted a Grant Line Road Safety and Freight Mobility Project application under the 2024 Trade Corridor Enhancement Program (TCEP) Cycle 4. This grant is a crucial step toward finalizing funding for an undertaking to significantly improve the road’s design, enhance safety, and support economic growth in our region.

Read the application here.

The 3.6-mile project builds on prior successes, including a $3 million TCEP Cycle 3 award and $25 million in funds from the federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. We appreciate the bi-partisan public and officials support for our effort to modernize Grant Line Road, addressing long-standing safety concerns, improving freight mobility, and adding sustainable features like a Class I multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Safety is personal to us, and the need for improvement is urgent. Rancho Cordova Vice Mayor Siri Pulipati recalled her recent harrowing experience on Grant Line Road when her car rolled over due to a road hazard while she tried to avoid an oncoming truck. “I blew through the fence and rolled into the middle of the fields. As the ambulance was taking me away, my first thought was, ‘Thank God my child was not in the car with me.’” You can read more about her perspective here.

Transportation equity is central to our mission, and this project improves access and safety for all, including underserved southern Sacramento County communities.

Our first responders have voiced their strong support for the project. Sacramento Metro Fire District Assistant Chief John Rudnicki and Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper have highlighted how the improved roadway will save lives, reduce emergency response times and facilitate evacuations during emergencies. Their insights are available here.

Labor organizations have also praised the project’s potential to create job opportunities and career pathways. Doyle Radford Jr., Business Manager for Local 185, noted that this project provides career "pathways for second-chance individuals" and equips them with valuable skills. Learn more about how the project empowers our workforce here.

The Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) has unanimously endorsed the Connector project, and we have bipartisan support from all locally elected state officials. This project is ready to make a lasting impact on safety, mobility, and sustainability in our region.

We’re committed to making this vision a reality, and I look forward to keeping you updated. For more information, visit our homepage.
